Iowa Juneteenth
Observance™
Affiliate of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation
Summary
The 2009 Iowa Juneteenth
Observance experienced the following major accomplishments in our
outreach and education activities:
1.
We hosted the first meeting of the major Juneteenth observances across
Iowa (Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Clinton, Davenport, Des Moines, and
Waterloo). We shared information on how to collectively grow the
Juneteenth observances. We estimate that 60,000 people will participate
in Juneteenth activities during 2009.
2.
We finished our 3-year history book project (2006-2008) whereby we
placed Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom in public libraries
in all 99 counties, and in all public middle school libraries in the
state. This activity provides a major source of cultural interaction and
social education as Iowans have library access to the history of
Juneteenth.
3.
We launched our participation in the Urban Scouting Project in
partnership with the Mid-Iowa Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The
project is designed to return urban youth to scouting programs and to
provide them with personal development activities that will assist with
their preparation as future community leaders. The project will conclude
in 2010.
4.
We were part of an historic first as we became the first African
American nonprofit organization to present a forum on the Iowa
Communications Network (ICN) which was broadcast to several cities (see
our Health Forum information on this web site).
We look forward to seeing you at this year’s Iowa Juneteenth Observance
that will run from June 11-19, 2010!
