King Johnny and Queen Barbara Long (seated) with family members

The Iowa Juneteenth Observance is pleased to announce that Johnny E. Long, Jr. and Barbara J. Long of West Des Moines are this year’s King and Queen.

In order to be nominated for the Iowa Juneteenth Observance King and Queen, a couple must be married for a minimum of 35 consecutive years, and have contributed to the betterment of their church and community. The Longs were married in 1951 and are the parents of 6 children. They are also proud grandparents, great-grandparents, and great-great-grandparents. The Longs are members of Mount Hebron Missionary Baptist Church in Des Moines, where Rev. Bobby Young is the Pastor. They also attend the Valley Community Church in West Des Moines, where their son, Rev. Stephen E. Long is Pastor.

The royal couple has demonstrated excellent service in the religious community in positions ranging from the Usher Board to the Board of Trustees. The Long’s community involvement includes, but is not limited to, volunteering with the Eddie Davis Community Center; Treasurer, Marquette Cement Plant Credit Union; West Des Moines Hawks Softball team; Secretary, AFL-CIO Local Union; West Des Capitol Improvement Program; President (Johnny) and Secretary (Barbara), Valley Junction Residential Association; West Des Moines Police, Youth Juvenile Initiative; and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Amicae.

As the 2009 Iowa Juneteenth Observance King and Queen, the Longs will continue the tradition of being ambassadors for family values, church service, and community volunteerism just as the royal lineage of 16 King and Queen couples have done before them.

Above is a special tribute to the deceased Iowa Juneteenth Observance Kings and Queens that was on display at the 2009 coronation program.
