Activity A: Iowa Juneteenth Parade

  • Location: Drake University on the parking lot behind the Dial Computer Services Center, which is on 24th & Carpenter.
    Time: 9:30 am (staging of parade begins at 8:30 am)
    Free registration: Open to the public. Enter your floats, trucks, cars, or just plain walk!
    Dress: Casual

Activity B: Neighbors Day

  • Location: Evelyn Davis Park, 14th and Forest Avenue (Des Moines)
    Time: Noon to 7:00 PM
    Entertainment: Multiple music groups

Main Stage Activities:

  1. Noon: Opening Prayer, National Anthem, Lift Every Voice, and Proclamation, and Iowa Juneteenth Anthem.
  2. 12:15 pm: Marking the anniversary of the State of Iowa versus Katz Drug Store landmark judicial victory, remarks by Ruth Ann Gaines, informs audiences about how civil rights activist, Edna Griffin, fought to end public accommodation discrimination in Iowa.
  3. 1:00 pm: The ‘Ambassadors of Praise’ Choir of Cornerstone Family Church, directed by Minister Tina Williams, ‘will take you there’ with their joyful noise unto the Lord!
  4. 2:00 pm: The Sumpin’ Doo Blues and Soul Band, will feature two outstanding Iowa Blues Hall of Fame members…George and Gil Davis…as they remind you that “the sexy” never left Iowa!
  5. 3:00 pm: The stage will be closed for the “Chillin’ and Drillin’ in da Park” featuring the award-winning Isiserettes Drill & Drum Corps and the Infamous Warriors Drill Team.
  6. 4:00 pm: “Big Bang” is a hot rap group out of Cedar Rapids that will be bringing their own noise and pleasing da crowd in the process!
  7. 5:00 pm: Old School and R&B sounds turn up the heat when “Comfort Zone” takes the stage.
  8. 6:00 pm: One of Iowa’s best young talents, “The Des Moines Boyz”, will be keepin’ it real at Evelyn Davis with tracks from their newest CD.
  9. 6:30 pm: The closing act will feature a ‘blast from the past’, featuring Waterloo native, aka Old School DJ ‘Master C’ the Night Jammer, spinning his disks and blowing our minds as we bring the 18th Annual Iowa Juneteenth Observance to an end!

    Note: There will be various activities in the park such as:
  1. “Kiddie Theme Park” with inflatable rides, mid-way games, prizes, and lots of other activities for the young ones.
  2. “McGruff” the crime-fighting dog, and “Pluggie” the fire-safety mascot, will be there for the kids!
  3. There will be a Bicycle Rodeo on Forest Avenue at 1:30 pm, followed by a bicycle safety class for parents and kids (the kids will get a chance to ride the bikes!)
  4. There will be a class for anyone wanting to learn how to begin playing authentic African drums!
  5. There will be a “real boy scout camp” (to include the campfire) set up so that boys and girls can get a first-hand introduction to what scouting offers young people. Parents can find out about scouting and sign their children up at the park!
  6. There will be a large number of exhibits for employment, product marketing, corporate community outreach, college recruitment, health, early child development, housing assistance, veteran affairs, insurance, food, and much, much more!

Activity C: Iowa Juneteenth Baby Contest

  • Location: Forest Avenue Library, Small Conference Room, at 1326 Forest Avenue.
    Time: 3:00 PM
    * (Note: If you are submitting an application in advance, check in at 2:30 PM. If you are completing an application at the Forest Avenue Library on June 21, then check in at 2:00 PM). Applications can be emailed to Felisa McGarity (see email address below along with other contact information!
    Honorees: There will be a contest for infants and toddlers, with first, second, and third place honors including trophies and other prizes.
    Free admission: Open to the public
    Dress for Theme: Iowa Families: Guardians of Freedom, Liberty, and Citizenship
