2010 Iowa Juneteenth Observance Committee

The Iowa Juneteenth Observance Planning Committee consists of volunteers from various career and service backgrounds. The Iowa Juneteenth Observance’s accomplishments are unique when considering it is the largest event produced by the African American community and operates as an independent and self-reliant entity that is community-driven. Our 2010 Iowa Juneteenth Observance Committee consists of a demographic and geographic representation of volunteers.

Iowa Juneteenth Training Institute

We are fortunate to have committed volunteers serving as Vice Chairs (managers), Committee Chairs (supervisors), and Committee Members (key workers) for the many activities of the Iowa Juneteenth Observance. We are a leading example in Iowa of providing volunteers with opportunities and skills that may enhance their marketability for job advancement or personal growth. Currently, “potential volunteers” undergo a formal orientation on the historical significance of Juneteenth and are provided with a face-to-face interaction with members of the Iowa Juneteenth Observance Planning Committee regarding the Iowa Juneteenth Observance activities. Following orientation, the potential volunteers may opt for committee assignments where they feel most comfortable in making a contribution. Once assignments have been determined, Vice Chairs and Committee Chairs undergo additional leadership skills training at a later date on program planning, budgeting, and communications.

We take pride in developing African American leaders and contributors that also use their skills to serve other community organizations in the state. In fact, several organizations have adopted our approach to organizing programs and activities.

In many situations, we are the only source for African Americans to readily access such leadership opportunities. Therefore, we are honored to be a leader in providing volunteer service with professional skills.
